10.08.2010

Founded in 1997 and based in Brussels, LAb[au] mainly creates interactive artworks, audiovisual performances and scenographies, for which it develops its own software and interfaces. This innovative Belgian design studio recently transformed the Dexia Tower, located in Brussels, into a jaw dropping light-based weather forecasting installation. LAB[au] utilized the buildings facade (6,000 windows) as a blank canvas, outfitting the structure with over 72,000 LED lights. This unusual combination of art, science and architecture enables people to visualize the next day's weather forecast from miles away. The installation uses real time data to project the temperature, cloudiness, precipitation and wind using colors and different geometrical patterns. More information and images after the jump!

"LAb|au| developed a transdisciplinary and collaborative approach based on different artistic, scientific and theoretic methods, examining the transformation of architecture and spatio-temporal structures in accordance to the technological progress within a practice entitled 'MetaDeSIGN'. Metadesign [ meta = information about information ] displays the theme of space-constructs relative to information processes - architecture as a code. It concerns the transposition of inFORMational processes in n-dimensional form."
