A generative system is a closed, self-contained, system based on rules, algorithms, which describe the behavior of its constitutive elements. Out of the multiplicity of simple elements following simple rules, patterns and complex behavior emerge. To meet the definition of generative art, an artwork must be self-contained and operate with some degree of autonomy in the form-finding process. The term generative in the field of art refers to a method of making art and in this respect considers the system as being the content, the intention, of the artwork.
